How to find streamers

For when your game isn't Minecraft

TL;DR

  • Make a list of popular games like your own
  • Find streamers who play those games
  • Review statistics and pick those that meet your needs
  • Adapt your game to be streamer friendly

Pick your comparison games

Now if you have done your homework you should already have market research and a bunch of comparison games. Otherwise, start by looking at your genre, core mechanics, art style, target audience, etc. and make a list of similar games. 5 popular titles should be enough to start, and don't worry, this list will grow as we continue.

Also be aware of what kind of streamer you are looking for. Do you just care about large viewer numbers? Do you care about mature or wholesome communities? Do you have specific language streamers or regions in mind?

Find your comparison tools

Twitch

For Twitch, I recommend using sullygnome.com. There is also twitchtracker.com so use whatever you find easiest.

Sully Gnome summary of streams

You can look at streamers that have played those games recently. Compare the metrics provided to narrow down the list and then start looking at specific streamers. What is their main channel content. How often do they play new/different games? While it would be great if a popular streamer started playing your game regularly, it is more likely that they might play your game as a one-off for an event or as part of their stream for some variety or a change of pace, so make sure they actually have space in their schedule to mix things up.

YouTube

YouTube is a little bit harder. You can use a free site like https://playboard.co/ however this does not let you search by games.

There is another site (https://streamscharts.com/) however they charge a large amount for YouTube stats. If you find a better way, please let me know.

Youtube channel for overcooked 2

So instead I search for specific games on YouTube and look at the game page there (like Overcooked 2 - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQZUqEFx9r0q-CEgyPydADA/home). Then you can scroll through creators there and if you find some that you like you can then review them more generally on playboard.co.

Unexpected revelations

Make sure that you take in as much as possible and even watch some past or live streams of your potential streamers. You may learn something you didn't know before. I found several games to add to my comparison titles that I had never heard of by looking at other games played by the streamers I was watching, and found some interesting features that I could add to my game.

Also, I found out that certain games are much bigger in some counties than others. For example Fall Guys is incredibly popular with French-speaking streamers. To be successful in this area we are considering making French localisation a priority.

We are trying very hard to show our game to the world. You could help us out a lot by letting us know that you were here, where you came from, and where you went. Of course, you can see what exactly we'd like to track right here.
